About the course: World-Academies, the Knowledge Management Startup for Remote Training and Research (RTR) collaborations, based at Technical University of Dresden in Germany, is going to organize this online course for all engineering, fundamental, biomedical and environmental fields, starting from basic physicochemical concepts and interfacial transport phenomena to measurements and characterization techniques at equilibrium and dynamic conditions, for Nano-Biotechnology, petrochemical, material and energy multiphase processes and biomedical applications. The course will be presented by the experienced lecturers and group leaders with background from Max Planck Institute for Colloids & Interfaces, TU-Dresden, TU-Darmstadt and TU-Berlin, within 12 lectures sessions x 60 min (November 6 to December 11, Mondays & Wednesday 16:00-17:00, Berlin Time Zone) + Research Education Workshop Day (13 December, 13:00-17:00) on “Special Topics in Colloids and Interfaces, Current and Future Trends and Innovations”.

This course is designed for students, researchers and experts in all engineering, fundamental, biomedical and environmental fields, starting from basic physicochemical concepts and interfacial transport phenomena to measurements and characterization techniques at equilibrium and dynamic conditions, for better understanding of the material and energy processes in multiphase systems, bio-nanotechnology, petrochemical, environmental and biomedical applications.  

Course Content (Sessions, Mondays and Wednesdays 16:00-17:00, Berlin Time)

Session 1 Introduction to surface and interfacial phenomena: Concepts and importance

Session 2- Basic theories in surface and interfacial phenomena: Thermodynamics, Equation of State, Adsorption Isotherms, and Dynamics of Adsorption

Session 3 Fundamentals of surfactant and protein adsorption

Session 4- Dynamics surface phenomena and kinetics of adsorption at liquid interfaces: Combined physical chemistry and interfacial transport phenomena (mass transfer, fluid dynamics, Marangoni convection.

Session 5- Experimental methods for surface tension measurements.

Session 6- Profile analysis Tensiometry (PAT) and Maximum Bubble Pressure (BPT), fundamentals and applications.

Session 7- Interfacial dilational and shear rheology.

Session 8- Mixed complex layers formation and characterization (Nanoparticle, surfactants, polymers and proteins), Micelles and Self-Assembly Structures.

Session 9- Emulsions and Foams, Formation and Stability.

Session 10- Thin liquid films, concept, experiments, and analysis.

Session 11- Nano fluids and colloidal particle dispersion and stability: DLVO Theory and Zeta Potential.

Session 12- Liquid solid interactions: Contact Angles & Wettability measurement and analysis.

Workshop Day:

Special Topics in Colloids and Interfaces, Current and Future Trends in Science & Technology, 13th December, 1:00 to 5:00 pm, Berlin time.

  • 2-Encapsulation of Curcumin in Liquid Lipid Nanocapsules: an example of interfacial engineering of emulsions. 
  • 3-Interaction of Marangoni and Buoyancy Effects During Mass Transfer at Liquid Interfaces.
  • 4-Dynamics of complex liquid-fluid-solid interfaces: From wetting dynamics and emulsification to the insitu fabrication of porous medium.
  • 5-Froth Flotation, Competitive Surface Phenomena.
  • 6-Liquid Solid Interactions, Contact Angles & Wettability Measurement and Analysis.
  • 7-Oil and Gas Reservoir Engineering, Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR).
  • 8-Multiphase Flow Modelling and Simulations: Interface tracking and boundary layers

This workshop is an opportunity for students and experts to interact with professors and group leaders in related area towards new projects & positions and career developments in related area.

Dear Kehinde, I think the knowledge you can take via this course from the top professors of this field will bring you in the level to understand the basis of your adsorption phenomena, phase changes, and multiphase modeling simulations. Then you can setup your simulation case better, perform more meaningful analysis, and enhance your creativity for preparing your results as new manuscript, patent developments and new projects.

    I’m interested to join the online sessions because they will help me a lot with my master thesis. I’m studying CO2 switchable surfactants in an attempt to evaluate different surfactants in terms of their foam generation and stability. However, I think it’s late for me at the moment. I would like to ask you if the lectures recorded or the presentaion slides available. Would it be beneficial to me if I joined now?
